A tranquil beach in Ullal best known for viewing the sunset is the Someshwar Beach. Located 16 km from Mangalore there is Someshwar temple near the beach which was built during Rani Abbakka’s rule.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Somnatha which is a century-old temple. The beach is unsuitable for swimming because of the hidden rocks and strong currents.

People mainly visit the temple, watch the sunset and walk along the long beautiful coastline.

There is a Shiva Linga or Rudra Shile on a rock which can be seen from a distance and its definitely going to remind you of the popular scene from the blockbuster movie Bahubali, wherein Bahubali walks on the rocks, and places Shiv Linga under the waterfalls.

St.Mary’s Island, Malpe

There is a cluster of islands located 20 min away from Malpe beach. One among them is St Mary’s island which is visited by hundreds of tourists every year. The island is accessible only from Malpe beach through frequent ferry rides during the day.

Hexagonal basalt rocks formed millions of years ago when Madagascar drifted away from the land of India.

Discovered and named by Vasco Da Gama, this island is popular for many reasons. Tourists enjoy the ferry rides, water sports, and Sunset view in the evening.

Adyar Sunset point near Mangalore

Adyar Sunset viewpoint is one such hidden spot that many of them are not aware of. Located 12km from Mangalore, this viewpoint is located over a small hill. But it gives you a panoramic view overlooking the beautiful Netravati river.

You can also see the National highway from here. People visit this place to see the sunrise too. I visited the spot in the evening and would like to visit again in the morning.

It is also called the Valachil viewpoint. The Adyar waterfall is within walking distance from this viewpoint which can be visited during monsoons.

Beware of broken beer bottles here as this place is not yet a proper tourist spot, hence there is zero maintenance. Few people mindlessly litter the place. Hopefully, they stop it and keep the surroundings clean.

Kapu Lighthouse And Beach

Kapu or Kaup is a small village located 40 km away from Mangalore and 17km from Udupi. The main attraction here is the lighthouse which is built over a rock. The beach is also very clean and serene. Built-in 1901, this 130 ft. lighthouse has stood the test of time.

It was built during those days when satellite navigation was not available for ships to sail safely and lighthouses were the only source of light to warn sailors about the rocky shore ahead.

This lighthouse is still operational even today and it guides sailors with its high-intensity lamps.

The lighthouse can be visited by paying a small fee. Visitors can visit the lighthouse during the day only. The lighthouse is closed to visitors after 5 pm.

The ticket cost per person is Rs 10/-
If you are carrying a camera, Rs 20/- has to be paid.

Once you climb up all the way, you are going to be awe-struck by the panoramic views of the coastline, the greenery, and the clean shores. Also do not miss watching the golden-colored sky from the lighthouse.

Bengre Sunset Point

Another hidden gem in Mangalore which is known only to locals is the Bengre sunset viewpoint. It is a delta point where you can see Netravati and Gurpur Rivers join into the Arabian Sea forming an estuary.

Here at the delta point, you can witness 3 water bodies joining, and also capture time-lapse shots of the sunset happening. Your visit here is sure going to be worthwhile.

You can reach here by continuing on the same road that leads to Tannirbhavi beach. There are no shops or stalls nearby. So it’s better to carry healthy snacks and drinking water along with you.

Do not stay until it’s dark as it’s not a proper tourist like other popular beaches. It is not a crowded place. Also, this beach is not meant for swimming.

Agumbe Sunset Point

Have you seen the popular old show called Malgudi days? Most parts in this series were shot around Agumbe village in the Western Ghats. So you can imagine how picturesque this place could be.

Agumbe has acquired many titles for its rich biodiversity, forested valleys, viewpoints, and waterfalls. Known as Cherrapunji of South India, Agumbe has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. This place is known for the cobras in its forest.

There are many hairpin curves when you go to Agumbe. The sunset point is located in the 14th hairpin curve. It is the highest Sunset point accessible to people in the ghats so far. 

Agumbe is also famous for many waterfalls which can be visited during monsoons.

Kundadri Hills

A small hill located near Agumbe, called Kundadri Hills gives a spectacular view of the sunset.

Since it involves driving through deep forests and curved roads, many tourists often do not visit. Only people who are driving enthusiasts come to this spot to see the breathtaking views of Kundadri Hills.

There is an ancient Jain temple on the hill which is often visited by Jain members. A small pond beside the temple adds more beauty to this place.

If you visit here during winter, you can find yourself above a layer of clouds. Agumbe sunset point and Kundadri Hills can be covered in a one-day trip.

Lobo’s River View

A calm and peaceful place in Mangalore located around 20 min from Mangalore is Lobo’s River View. It is situated on the banks of River Netravati.

This quiet place is good for clicking beautiful pictures with the river in the background. Many people organize their small evening parties and functions in this place.

There is an entry fee for this place but it is worth the visit. You get to see the enchanting sunset if you visit in the evening. There is ample parking space and enough place for people to sit, and watch the sunset.
